Gemma Galdon shorlisted finalist as Entrepreneur of the Year at Booking.com’s Prizes
The trajectory of Eticas and Gemma Galdon Clavell have made her one of the finalists of the Technology Playmaker awards that highlight the transformative work of women at the forefront of projects, initiatives and companies that have to do with technology.
Gemma Galdon Clavell (Mataró, 1976) is founder and CEO of Eticas Research & Consulting, a company based in the Raval neighborhood (Ciutat Vella) of Barcelona. She is shortlisted finalist at Technology Playmaker Awards, organized by Booking.com, in the category of Entrepreneur of the Year, being the only Spanish woman among the 6 finalists.
Dr. Gemma Galdon Clavell founded Eticas in 2012 as an universitary spin-off with humble aspirations and now, Eticas is a consolidated SME with a multidisciplinary team of more than 30 employees around Europe and offices in Spain, Belgium and Serbia and is working on the social, ethical and legal impact of security policy, innovation and technology development at the interaction between changing societal values, engineering possibilities and fundamental rights. This trajectory already earned Gemma the nomination last year at the EU Women Innovators Prize.
In addition, this journey and recognition are reinforced by the entry into force of the new General Data Protection Regulation on May 2018, and reinforces the need for entities in Europe to take data protection and privacy requirements seriously into account and apply the highest standards of security and ethics. Besides, is a proof of the need for the analysis and services that Eticas provides, showing how strategic the choice to work on the ethics of technology and responsible innovation actually was.
In words of Gemma Galdon Clavell: “Innovating in technology is not easy, especially when you build bridges between the technical and the social, exploring practical ways of incorporating ethics and privacy in data systems, this is a small field where you can succeed but you still do not understand it or take it into account … Nominations like the Technology Playmaker Awards are a stimulus and a proof that hard work and innovative ideas can find support. “
Moreover, we recently launched the Eticas Foundation to channel our research, advocacy and training activities, including the creation of the Civic Tech Hub in Barcelona, in the Old City District (Ciutat Vella). We are showing that there is value (economic and otherwise) in the interaction between engineering and social sciences.
Gemma Galdon is also proof that it is possible to create a reference organization that puts values and ethics at the core of both our services and the way we work. Eticas’ success relies on Gemma’s skills and inspiration, her personal passion, motivation and efforts to get our early position in the market, a great team ready to provide the right insights and solutions, and a deep commitment to improving the world around us, from our neighborhood (Raval) to the international level.
The winners of the nine categories of the awards, together with the Global Technology Playmaker Award of the year 2018, will be announced in London on March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day. Randi Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Zuckerberg Media, will give the opening speech of the Technology Playmakers Awards event.
