1
Real GDPR Compliance

Complying with data protection law is not easy. We know. But proper compliance can bring about much more than just legal clearance. GDPR is an opportunity to build trust with your clients and improve your data processes.

At Eticas we help you comply in meaningful ways and identify how your new procedures can be communicated to your users and clients to improve transparency and accountability.

We implement legal requirements in the context of your services and the needs of your users, clients and team to turn compliance into a source of trust and a competitive advantage.

Eticas collaborated with the Electronic Frontier Foundation to study the practices of Spanish Internet companies and identify how they deal with the personal data of their clients. You can find the resulting report here:Quién defiende tus datos“.

We carry out the study and proposal of legal compliance of the European Regulation for the international Privacy Enhancing Technology Symposium.

The Eticas team collaborated with the Open Data Institute (ODI) to develop a set of practical guides for organizations when it comes to anonymizing the data that organizations want to share or disseminate. Take a look at the report.

Algorithmic Impact Assessment

We have developed our own methodology for algorithmic impact assessments that helps public and private entities to reduce risks linked to their security, production and reputation. The goal of our different services in this field is to minimize risks of possible biases and discriminations derived from automated data processing. In order to consider the margin of unpredictability and computational irreducibility present in algorithmic behavior, our algorithmic bias tracker incorporates social and ethical considerations, with a particular emphasis on the prevention of discrimination.

Together with experts from the Department of Information and Communication Technologies we have developed our own algorithmic impact assessment study methodology to prevent possible negative externalisations of automatic data processing.

We help companies and organizations to comply with the data protection requirements imposed by the new regulation (GDPR) in terms of algorithmic design by analyzing the entire data cycle.

As part of different projects funded by the European Commission, we implemented algorithmic impact studies of data-intensive technologies.

3
Technology Policy Design

We design and assess strategies oriented towards fostering an ethical and secure technological development in the public sector. As part of this, we also recommend concrete educational, organizational and technological mechanisms to optimize the implementation of data management policies.

We have collaborated with the Barcelona City Council in prospecting for the development of different local policies in the field of technology. For example, we contributed to the study on the Decidim.barcelona platform in 2016 and carried out the TIC and Gender study on the participation of girls and women in the different technological areas of the city. Platform : decidim.barcelona.

We collaborated in the D-CENT project, funded by the European Commission. Together with NESTA, W3C and OPEN RIGHTS GROUP we conducted a study on the recent evolution of the digital identity ecosystem in the context of Big Data, focused on the economic value of data and identity within the current economy.

Our Director, Gemma Galdon Clavell, developed the work "Policing, Big Data and the Commodification of Security" edited by Bart van der Sloot, Dennis Broeders & Erik Schrijvers, and published by The Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy. The report identifies the fundamental trends in police activities based on big data, noting the growing blurring of the boundaries between defense policies, crime prevention and intelligence in urban environments. .

4
Responsible Digital Transformation

The difficulties of incorporating technologies and data into existing projects are often underestimated. Most digital transformation plans focus on technical issues (finding the best technology to solve a problem), but leave aside matters related to end-to-end planning, system interoperability, staff commitment and training, and user experience.

We work with your organisation to help you take everything into account -we help you prioritise, chose, engage and monitor. Whether you want to go digital to better relate to your clients or to improve your internal processes and efficiency, we will guide you and take responsibility for the outcome.

We have experience in incorporating ethics in e-procurement processes, designing responsible data processes, merging data services and increasing efficiency and satisfaction in customer relations.

5
User interaction and fieldwork

Ethics has designed and implemented several field studies around the social impact of data-intensive technologies and computerized devices applied to security. Based on our own methodological approach, we have carried out usability and acceptability studies for various technological projects, with particular emphasis on their social impact in vulnerable groups.

We have collaborated with the Barcelona City Council in prospecting for the development of different local policies in the technological field. For example, we contributed to the study on the Decidim.barcelona platform in 2016 and carried out the TIC i gènere study on the participation of girls and women in the different technological areas of the city.

External ethics assessments and certification

It is increasingly common for funders and clients to require that any project involving data has some kind of external oversight and certification procedure to ensure that legal, social and ethical issues are properly taken into account. At Eticas we can provide such external oversight for projects and initiatives in all fields. Specifically, we have experience in working with the European Commission as external ethics experts in projects related to space and security, new technologies, transport, health and well-being. We provide assistance in drafting ethics reports and impact assessments, defining recruitment and consent strategies, addressing dual use and misuse issues, and elaborating Data Management Plans.

We provide ethical impact assessment according to European Commission guidelines, as part of Horizon 2020. Have a look at the guidelines here.
